The name is kind of a "duh" but Daily Grill’s new “Simply 600” menu is made up of meals that are 600 calories or less. The Simply 600 meals cater to everyone’s appetite but via lower calorie meals that, surprisingly, includes more than just salads (but I could do without all that arugula, personally. I like spinach myself). You will find a fair variety of sandwiches, burgers, tacos, seafood, chicken, meat and pasta dishes on the list.
Do not let the simplicity deceive you, either; these lighter alternatives are also hearty, full-sized portions. The plates are big and you almost get deceived but mark my words - you will be full.
At the chain’s Studio City location, you are sure to be greeted by one of the world’s best restaurant hosts (I love Stephanie), because they have the friendliest staff there. And true to the Daily Grill atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional, upscale New York City grill, the hosts are always dressed with class, which is a nice touch (She was in a suit and she looked FAB).
Note: Beware the Studio City location’s parking, however – you will not find anything upscale about that, which is a shame. Having a new gym in the complex probably doesn't help. But the guys down there did not know what they were doing and it took FAR too long to get my car out of the tandem space they stuck me in.
But let's get back to the food -- the stuff we really care about.
Among these newer menu items, the blackened tilapia has become a favorite, topped with a lemon butter caper sauce and served with a grilled vegetable skewer. The fish on the menu does not disappoint as a whole; the crab stuffed salmon is absolutely delicious and while its accompanying arugula salad is rather plain, the portion size is so massive, you probably won’t care (in the end, I didn't and I even tried the grilled tomato).
The “problem,” of course, is that Daily Grill’s regular menu has so many tasty options; it’s hard not to treat yourself to an appetizer or dessert. You would do well to stick to their gazpacho soup or fresh split pea (if it’s available that day, which it was for me). If dessert is a must, the strawberry shortcake is the lightest option, but only in calories – you may end up taking half of it home because it’s a towering helping of dessert. Those strawberries were GOOD. It is the time of year for strawberries!
But if you can manage to skip their mouth-watering sourdough bread - ok, ok, I had a piece - an appetizer and a dessert, you can easily get out of there satisfied for just 600 calories.
The Simply 600 menu is available for lunch and dinner at 20 Daily Grill locations (the only exception is the LAX Daily Grill). All the healthy eaters out there should give it a try -- there’s something for every palate. I really enjoyed it and thanks to Daily Grill and Blaze PR for having me.
